Drives me nuts with the hit or miss photo on here Don, I started to do pic's but figured why bother...plus the fact I wrote the post while at work, I don't have all my bike pic's on the work computer so the loaner would not be there even if I could post a pic.
Hey Super D , most DJ bikes I have seen run the single brake on the rear, guess they hold to the old BMX standard of a rear brake only. When I was a kid during the early BMX phase that was common and it was a rare sight to see somebody with fronts. You were in the Mother land of the sport during that time, same go for you?

P.S...I wrote this at work, try to remember to grab pic's at home to add

Yeah man, everything was evolving so quickly, it seemed like there was always something new on someone's bike at the track. Plenty of BMX kids had dads that were machinists or worked in that field in some capacity. All the races I did that Scot "The 'OM' King" Breithaupt designed were so technical and steep in places I was always glad I had that front to feather when needed. I had gotten to the point where I was only running a front and so were loads of other racers. The trick riders always had super stout brakes on both ends but those guys were a totally different breed of rider, our paths rarely crossed. Those were some fabulous days and when you added in skateboarding (ramps, pools, and skate parks) and punk music... always seemed like good days, you had a reason to get out of bed other than your mother screamin' at 'ya... ha-ha!!!

Humm, so you guys were into them but does stand to reason being that is where it all start and we were still behind. I remember reading in one of the BMX mags about the benefits of running front ( and these days after riding MTB I understand ) plus the other thing that cracks me up is the tooth count. Back then we ran big rings and cog where these days the drop tooth count for more rpm than muscle the bike around the track, thing that gets me is back then one of the guys I ran with was a Co-factory for GT and towards the end of our bmx time he push us to try spinning

There were guys that were ahead of their time for sure, the first guy I saw on small rings was John Tomac, but it was specifically for a certain track in one of the national title events. Yet, when he won the Cross Country Mountain Biking National Title he was in a giant road/track ring on a dirt drop set up. Pure animal is my best answer! The equipment was one thing but nothing took the place of simply being a monster mashers... John Tomac, Eric Carter, Brian Lopes, and my buddy Mark Salmon all were BMX National Champs and every one of them could ride the tires off the bike! It carried right over too, Tomac, Carter, and Lopes all went on to be National Champs in mountain biking. My buddy Mark went on to snag national titles in cyclocross and single speed racing. It was always humbling when we would meet back up at is bike shop after taking off together in a group pack, I pulled my best time on a local loop at 39 minutes and I was feeling great! That is until I found out that Mark had done the same loop in 28 minutes with only one gear... a straight up 1x1 ass whooping!!! What was eye opening was when I found out that Mark heading back out for a second loop to collect any stragglers, I felt for those guys. You always knew that you were riding with someone special, struggling to keep your breath, turning over your best gear to keep pace, and you look over to see that he was in his big chainring and telling jokes... *pppfffttt...* deflated and done!!!

Yeah, I agree but I don't want to get all nostalgic for a certain time period. That said, there were so many great things happening in mountain bikes for the entire 90's decade. Frame geometry and frame materials made drastic changes, from basically road bike geometry to sloping top tubes with steeper angles, 1 inch to 1 1/8th inch head tubes, threaded quill to threadless, and any frame material you wanted from steel, alloy, metal matrix, aluminum, bonded metals, titanium, and carbon fiber. We could spend an entire thread going over the evolution from rigid through full suspension but that horse has already run its race. For me though, it was the bike jewelry that really made it come alive... anodized CNC... incredibly beautiful parts in any color you could dream up. Showing up to your LBS to check out the newest colorful gems in the case, it brought back all the excitement I felt when anodized alloy BMX parts first hit the market. Color was king again! No doubt it was eye candy for sure but this time it came with the added improved performance over heavy cast components. That was it for me, brother, I was sold and started gobbling up anything I could afford. Even Uncle Sam helped out, I always took student loans for more than I needed just so I could stock up on the newest and greatest from PAUL, Ringle, Kooka, Nuke Proof, Hershey, etc., etc., etc.. Great times for sure!!!

Hey all-

When I revived this thread (back on page 4) I did so because it had been a year since the initial posting in January of 2014, I want to know what happened to your bike stable during the last year. Being 2015, I want to hear about your plans and future builds too. If you wish to get nostalgic for the CNC 90's or go way back to your BMX childhood, that would be great! If you can't find something to share in all that, please start a new thread and say what's on your mind.

Big thanks to vpc and zoltan for getting in early, looking forward to hearing from the rest of you soon!

Thanks... now get to typing!!!

-D-

No worries my brother... I'll take any reply that's bike related. Heck, I'll take any reply whatever the topic these days! Bring on the silliness, rude & crude, senile ramblings, or dead serious will do too. Let's see if anyone is inspired.

C'mon you Cudaheads!
